VAR Formula Syntax
Example Use Case
Estimating sample variance for variability analysis
Understanding the VAR Formula
The VAR function in Excel calculates the variance of a sample, showing the average squared deviation from the mean. It’s a statistical measure for variability—like stock price swings or test score spread—assuming a sample dataset.
VAR(A1:A5) with 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 returns 250, using Σ(x - mean)² / (n-1). It ignores text and blanks, focusing on numbers, offering a squared metric of dispersion for sample analysis.
Why Use VAR?
VAR quantifies spread—think risk analysis or data consistency. Its sample-based (n-1) formula adjusts for small sets, providing a foundation for standard deviation and statistical insights.
Example with Sample Data
Numbers | Formula | Result |
---|---|---|
10, 20, 30 | =VAR(10, 20, 30) | 100 |
5, 15, 25 | =VAR(5, 15, 25) | 100 |
1, 2, 3, 4 | =VAR(1, 2, 3, 4) | 1.67 |
VAR squares spread: 100 for 10, 20, 30; ~1.67 for 1, 2, 3, 4. It’s a sample variator.
