TAN Formula Syntax
Example Use Case
Calculating the tangent of an angle for slope or trigonometric analysis
Understanding the TAN Formula
The TAN function in Excel computes the tangent of an angle (in radians), the ratio of sine to cosine. It’s a trig staple for slopes, angles, or wave modeling in engineering, navigation, or physics.
TAN(0.7854) returns 1, as it’s π/4 radians (45°), where sine = cosine. It requires radian inputs (use RADIANS for degrees) and can grow unbounded, erroring at π/2 multiples.
Why Use TAN?
TAN measures slopes—think incline angles or tangent lines. Its ratio nature makes it key for trigonometric relationships, offering a dynamic tool for angular calculations.
Example with Sample Data
Angle (radians) | Formula | Result |
---|---|---|
0.7854 | =TAN(0.7854) | 1 |
0 | =TAN(0) | 0 |
1.0472 | =TAN(1.0472) | 1.73205 |
TAN tracks slopes: π/4 is 1, 1.0472 (60°) is ~1.732. It’s a trig trailblazer.
